KENTUCKY WILL PLAY GEORGIA AT 8 TONIGHT

Representatives of Blue Grass Are Not Extended in Defeating South Carolina Quintet

COMBS AND JEFFRIES LEAD WILDCAT SCORERS

ATLANTA, Ga., Feb. 24. -- The Atlanta hotels and restaurants are on their toes tonight, anticipating a golden harvest from the crowd of Kentuckians here for the Southern Conference basketball tournament. These friends of the Kentucky Wildcats, who hit this city today to see the annual gumshoe meet, are now prepared to remain at least another day, as the men of Mauer galloped through to an easy victory over South Carolina, 56 to 40, this afternoon.

The Wildcats will meet the University of Georgia in the quarterfinals tomorrow night at 8 o'clock. Georgia trounced Virginia Military Institute, 47 to 26, in the first game tonight.

The men of Mauer displayed the most scientific basketball of the day and although their defense appeared weak to the local experts, Wildcat fans are satisfied that the Blue boys can tighten up against stiff opposition.

In the game against South Carolina it was a case of too much "Pisgah" Combs and Irvine Jeffries. These Sophomores had their "lamps peeled" and, fed the leather by their mates, kept the hoops ringing with their goals. Kentucky worked the ball in for many crip shots and Combs led with eight, with Jeffries getting five, Jeff made three free throws and Combs four, these speedy forwards being repeatedly fouled as they drove into the basket for shots.

Kentucky moved into the lead early in the game and held the advantage throughout, leading at the half, 31 to 22.

The Illinois style of manipulating the ball around the court in the big auditorium here, as exemplified by the 'Cats, pleased Atlanta fans, who saw something new in offensive tactics. The Wildcats displayed a vast improvement over their last two games at home and are favorites to enter the semi-finals with a victory tomorrow.

Atlanta is singing the praises of Irvine Jeffries. The Louisville flash moved over the glistening boards with ease and grace. he looped the ball through the hoop from all angles and fitted perfectly into the team play. If Kentucky goes to the semi-finals, Jeffries is almost certain of being selected an All-Southern forward,and if the 'Cats wind up in the finals, Capt. Paul Jenkins appears to have a good chance of getting the All-Southern honor he earned two years ago.

The boys are getting a good rest and as today's game did not extend them, they should be in prime condition for their effort tomorrow night.

First Half

At 3:03 the first whistle blew and South Carolina grabbed the ball to miss a long field goal attempt. Jeffries blasted from the middle of the floor, but missed, and Combs followed it up with a field goal from under the basket. Clark fouled McBrayer and he made the shot good. Kentucky 3; South Carolina 0. Combs took a long pass under the basket and blew an easy shot. Jenkins shot a perfect field goal from the foul line to make the score 5 to 1. Combs took a perfect pass from Jeffries and shot a field goal, making the tally 7 to 1.

Clark missed a long shot. Jeffries charged and Pritchard missed a beautiful tripple pass. Combs popped a field goal directly under the basket. Combs shot but missed, but a few seconds later grabbed the ball and dribbled the entire length of the floor for a field goal. Kentucky 11: South Carolina 1.

McBrayer and Jenkins ruined the Carolina attack by beautiful guarding. Hair shot his first goal for Carolina under the basket, but Jenkins grabbed the ball and dribbled through the entire Red team for a field goal. Combs then fouled Hair and he made the free shot. Kentucky, on an out of bounds play, made a field goal, McBrayer tallying. Chandler fouled Combs and the latter made both shots good, making the score 17 to 4.

Kentucky Passing is Beautiful

Jeffries missed the board on a long shot from center. Kentucky rested a minute with Jenkins holding the ball. Holcombe fouled McBrayer and he made the shot good making it 18 to 4. Beautiful passing under the basket ended when Jeffries slapped in a pretty crip. Carolina could not penetrate the Kentucky defense. McGinnis missed a shot. Clark crashed a beautiful goal from the sidelines. Magnificent passing caused Kentucky to receive thunderous applause from several thousand fans. Combs grabbed a splendid pass and shot a field goal to make the score 22 to 6.

Milward replaced McBrayer at center. Clark banged a one-handed field goal from the side. McGinnis fouled Holcombe as he made a field goal. The goal counted and the player made one foul making the score 22 to 11.

Windus caught the Kentucky guards napping and scored a field goal from the foul line to make the score 22 to 13. Windus fouled Jenkins and he made one of two free throws. Combs fouled Chandler and he made it good, making the score 23 to 14. Holcombe slipped behind the Kentucky defense to score a field goal. The Kentucky defense was not functioning. McGinnis fouled Hair and he made both free throws, making the count 23 to 18. Jenkins dribbled behind Pritchard and snagged a field goal. Milward delayed a pass to Combs and he missed. McGinnis shot from the foul line, missed and followed it up with a field goal making the score 27 to 18.

Jeffries took a shot that went wide, but Kentucky got the ball out of bounds. Combs dribbled the entire length of the floor for a field goal. Jeffries looped a long one from the center circle to make the count 31 to 18. Windus shot a crip that he should not have gotten and the half ended here. Kentucky 31, South Carolina 22.

Second Half

In the second half, McBrayer returned to center for Kentucky. On the first tip-off Hair fouled McBrayer and he missed both goals. A long, one-handed unconscious shot by Holcombe sailed through the basket making the score 31 to 24. McBrayer fouled Holcombe and he made a free throw. Carolina had the ball and was shooting wildly in an effort to crawl up on the Cats. A jump ball and Jeffries dribbled through for a crip shot. Windus fouled Combs and he made it good, making the score 34 to 25.

Holcombe followed up a long shot and batted in a field goal. On the tip-off Jeffries snagged a .... (part of article (two paragraphs) ripped out of microfilm)....

... a pretty passing play, dribbled through for a field goal making the score 46 to 35. McBrayer got the ball after the tip and shot a beautiful goal from the side lines. Chandler fouled Combs and he made one out of two throws, making the score 49 to 35.

McBrayer blocked Holcombe and he made his shot good. Clark got a crip when he went behind Kentucky's defense. Combs dribbled through for a field goal. S. Carolina shot was wide and Fair fouled McBrayer, who made two free throws good - Kentucky 53, Carolina 37. Holcombe fouled Combs and he made his shot. Owens, Milward and Jenkins went in for Kentucky. Owens passed to Jenkins who missed by inches. Milward intercepted a pass but Jeffries fouled Pritchard, who missed. The score was 54 to 37. Clark got a field goal and a foul to make it 54 to 40. Chandler fouled Owens, who made both shots to make the score 56 to 40.

KENTUCKY TEAM PRAISED - BY HORACE C. RENEGAR (Associated Press Sports Editor)

AUDITORIUM, ATLANTA, Ga., - Feb. 24 (AP) -- Auburn's highly touted Plainsmen, coming to the Southern Conference basketball tournament with a record of 17 victories out of 18 starts, caught a tartar in Clemson College in the opening round of tourney play today, but managed to win, 27 to 26.

It was the climax game to the afternoon's play, keeping a large gallery in an uproar throughout.

Virginia previously had overwhelmed Alabama's Crimson Tide, 42 to 25.

University of Mississippi disposed of North Carolina State, 40 to 35.

For swiftness, teamwork, and aptness in handling the ball, the University of Kentucky's diminutive five took honors for the day. Combs, a fast moving forward, counted eight field goals in his team's 56 to 40 victory over South Carolina, while McBrayer, scrappy center; Jenkins, dribbling guard, and Jeffries, versatile forward, were other stars in their conquest.

Holcombe, of South Carolina, proved one of the most versatile centers seen in a conference tourney here in years. He not only ran the floor well, but found time to sink seven field goals and two fouls.
