Up From the Floor:

The Wildcats picked themselves up of the floor and stuck it to a good Alabama team which came fired up out of the gates, but which like so many other UK opponents, wilted after their initial fire had been quenched.

Bama took the early lead and built it up to 15 points about midway through the first half, hitting well offensively and playing exceptional defense (in particular, blocking many UK shots, several on easy layups), but the Cats refused to get rattled, and slowly built their way back into the game based on fine interior play by Mashburn after their 3 point shooting had gone awry (UK was 2-11 at one point, before concluding the game with a beggarly 3-16 from long distance). The Cats pulled to within 2 at the half.

After that it was almost all Kentucky. UK charged out to quickly tie the game, and then, based on steady offensive play by Mashburn, Martinez (who always does well against the Tide, it seems) and Brown, built their own lead to 15 points before finally winning by 14, 73-59. Dale Brown did particularly well defensively, limiting the SEC's leading scorer, James Robinson, to 2 free throws in the second half. All of Martinez's points came in the second half.

Travis Ford had an unusual game. He had more rebounds than assists! There were surprisingly few assists for both sides in this contest - 20 all told. Pitino considered starting Junior Braddy instead of Roderick Rhodes in this one, but he changed his mind.

At this point in the season, UK, Florida, and Vanderbilt lead the SEC East with a 3-1 record. Arkansas leads in the SEC West at 3-0. Kentucky is now 12-1, Bama falls to 9-5, 2-3 in the SEC.
