Kentucky Crushes Arizona by 77-53; Muhlenberg Wins

18,483, Record for Garden, See Top-Seeded Five Advance in National Invitation

Favored Kentucky and an underdog Muhlenberg quintet moved into the semi-finals of the ninth annual national invitation college basketball tournament at Madison Square Garden last night. The Kentuckians, never in the red, won almost as they pleased, 77-53, from an overmatched Arizona outfit, while the Mules, despite a second-half let-down, upset Syracuse, 47-41.

All of the thrills of Thursday night's inaugural, which was topped by Ernie Calverley's 55-foot field goal, were not matched in last night's double-header. That would be asking too much. There was, however, enough excitement for a crowd of 18,483 persons, representing an all-time Garden record, surpassing by twenty-five the turnout of Thursday.

Kentucky and Arizona had the same nickname, Wildcats, and each entered the game with a record that boasted twenty-five victories during the regular season. There, however the comparison ended. For the Kentucky Wildcats had it all over the Arizona Wildcats and gave evidence why the victors were seeded on top in this tournament.

So superior were the Kentucky players, who got off to a 16-1 lead at the outset and held a 43-22 edge at the intermission, that Coach Adolph Rupp started to remove his regulars eight minutes before the end. With five minutes remaining, every Kentucky first-stringer was on the bench. Arizona, despite its height advantage, could not match the Kentuckians, Southeast Conference champions, in speed, ball handling and court know-how.

Nearly seven minutes elapsed before Arizona was able to claim its initial field goal. The losers' inaccuracy from the floor was matched in their foul shooting and at no time during the contest was Kentucky's all-around superiority questioned.

The individual high scorer in this encounter, surprisingly enough, was Lincoln Richmond of Arizona, who clicked in 21 points. Fred Enke Jr., son of the Arizona coach, and hardest worker on the team, tallied 18, all except four in the second half.

For the victorious Kentuckians, Wallace (Wawa) Jones, their freshman sensation, was high man with 16. However, much credit must go to all the winning players, the others being Jack Tingle, Jack Parkinson, Ralph Beard and Wilbur Schu. These five worked smoothly as a unit and if their exhibition of last night means anything, they will be tough to hurdle.

The victories of Muhlenberg and Kentucky will send these teams into tomorrow night's semi-finals against Rhode Island State and West Virginia, respectively. With three of the four favorites rudely upset in the preliminaries, there is no telling which way the wind will blow in the penultimate round.
