But Wildcats Run Contest to Suit Themselves in Second Period, Winning by 40 to 23 Score

WRECKING CREW GETS IN

The largest crowd that has perched on the rafters of the University of Kentucky gymnasium since the memorable Kentucky-Centre clash of 1921 clogged the Wildcat den last night to see the Blue and White basketball team meet the Centre quintet in the semi-final event on Lexington's 1922 intercollegiate net schedule. The crowd has come out to see another great basketball game, such as the Wildcats have been showing on the local floor at intervals for the last two years.

The Wildcats let them have what they wanted - a great basketball game - for exactly 20 minutes. At the end of that first half the score was 17 to 13 in favor of Kentucky. But the Wildcats ran the game to suit themselves in the second 20 minutes, regardless of what the crowd had come for, and when the ultimate shot had bounced off the backboard the score was 40 to 23 in favor of Kentucky. The Wildcats had scored as many points in the second half as had the Colonels during the entire game.

The Wildcats outpassed, outplayed and outshot the visitors throughout the game, but they never outfought the "Fighting Colonels." Centre's aggressiveness during the first period almost placed the saffron team on a par with the first champions of the South, but in the second period neither aggressiveness, nor five man defense, nor anything Centre could furnish was able to stop the persistent attack of the indigo outfit and towards the last of the game the step from the sublime to the ridiculous was taken. The Wildcat "wrecking crew" hoisted sail and entered the contest, with the Centre substitute squadron right on their heels.

Bill King registered the first goal in the first two minutes of play, a neat shot from back of the foul circle. Centre took the lead at 6 to 5, increased it to 7 to 5, and after that was too hot for anything less than a championship team to travel. Early in the second half the score at one time was 18 to 16, but before Centre had scored again Kentucky had moved her standing around to 32. The drama was turning to comedy. The score moved up to 36 to 22 and the two wrecking outfits finished the battle.

Centre's five man defense worked well, but the Wildcat passing machine worked better. The daring style of play employed by the Blue team sometimes ripped open big gaps in the stalwart Colonel defense, and although there were less than a dozen real "crips" during the game, the Wildcats were able to make many shots from close range. However, the Kentucky team scored more long goals, perhaps than in any game in the last two years, for whenever the visitors' defense was too stubborn the Wildcats tossed their goals right over the Colonels' head.

Five stars went into making the Kentucky team into an organization with the precision of clockwork. King was great for his floorwork. Lavin for his breaking up of the enemy attack, Burnham for his superb guarding, Adkins for his great goal shooting, and Hayden for all of them. Flippin and Covington played best games for Centre.

The Colonels will play the University of Cincinnati at Cincinnati Wednesday night and leave for the tournament at Atlanta Thursday morning. The Kentucky team will leave for Atlanta to defend its title Wednesday night.
