'CATS BEAT STRONG MARYVILLE QUINTET
Playing with mid-season snap, the Wildcats found their claws last night and sank them into Maryville, reputed to be the best basketball team in Tennessee, and conquerors of the Centre Colonels the night previous, to the tune of 27 to 13, outclassing the Tennessee lads in every department of the game.
Forced by the lack of lights in the University of Kentucky gymnasium to play in the Senior High school gymnasium, the two teams met on a neutral floor, and fighting to a finish, left no doubt as to superiority.
The 'Cats took the jump on their opponents at the start of the game, and led by six points at the end of the first five minutes of play, maintaining the lead throughout the half, which ended 11 to 5, with Kentucky on the big end. Neither team was very successful in hitting the basket during the first half due largely to fierce guarding on both sides, but each was more accurate in the last period.
Honors for Kentucky were about even, Blakey, Hayden and Everett caging three field goals each, and Smith getting two. The all-around floor work of Hayden showed exceptionally well, the right forward also pitching five fouls out of seven attempts.
The Maryville five showed little of the team work for which they have been touted, Kentucky having little trouble in keeping possession of the ball the greater part of the time. Montgomery, at guard, and Wagner, captain of the visitors, played well for Maryville.
The Wildcats were led into the fray last night by their newly elected captain, J.C. Everett, who was chosen to lead the 1920 squad at a special election held Wednesday. Everett was center on the 1919 Kentucky five, and is holding the same position this year. He played a good game last night.
The victory last night gives Kentucky a decided edge over the Centre Colonels, who were defeated by Maryville Wednesday night, and indicates that the Wildcats will be a power to be reckoned with in the State championship race.
