Game is Pronounced the Best Basket Ball Contest Seen in Lexington This Season
In forty minutes of fast play the State University basket ball team defeated the five from Bethany College by a score of 24 to 11 Saturday night. The game was rough and both sides fouled repeatedly, but it was one of the best exhibitions of the game seen on a Lexington floor this season.
The first half opened rather slow, but the speed picked up and Hart threw the first goal for State. Team work and passing was exceptionally good, and both teams guarded well. Hart and Harrison each made a spectacular shot; the Bethany forwards were too closely guarded to work effectively, but Wells got a couple of clean baskets. Both teams fouled nine times; Capt. Bradford and Hart each drew five safe ones. Early in the half Umbenhower replaced Bradford at forward and Bradford took Kerfoots place at center. Half ended 13 to 9 in favor of State.
The second half was faster. Both teams came back with a rush and for a few minutes neither made any points. Goal throwing was kept at a minimum and it was only when the State forwards ran away from the visiting guards for a moment that a basket was thrown.
Captain Bradford was suffering an injury sustained in the recent Transylvania game and had to leave the floor in favor of Kerfoot. Marx and Wells essayed a little roughness in a personal way and were promptly put out of the game. However, considering the fact that Bethany had no other substitutes, Wells was reinstated. Shropshire was not so successful in his foul-throwing and dropped several easy points for his team. The final score was State 24, Bethany 11.
Capt. Bradford was not at all confident his team would win. He said that since the game was played under the AAU rules his men were handicapped because of the several differences between the AAU code and the IAA rules. The game Saturday night was the last of a series of six games with Ohio and Kentucky colleges, of which three were won, and three were lost. The squad leaves for Bethany Sunday morning.
State's team has improved a hundred per cent. Team work and goal shooting has picked up greatly so that the poor form of the early season has been left far behind. Preston, a new recruit and Gaiser, at guard, showed up exceptionally well. All other men played hard and well. For Bethany, Umbenhower and Wells were stars although the latter played too aggressively to be fully effective.
